We are looking for a highly motivated person to work with Dr. Perlman on a Research Project about the impact of the 2016 Olympics on public policy and on the struggle for the right to the city in Rio de Janeiro. The research for this project was conducted between 2015-2018, and involved 225 interviews with leaders from favelas, civil society, academics; local government, international agencies; and the private sector. She and her local Rio team conducted site visits to 36 favelas and all Olympic Sites. Partial analysis of the material, a working outline and draft chapters are already available. The exciting creative work for this INTERN will be integrating the parts into a coherent compelling Narrative along with updated information about Rio and public policy; poems, songs and direct quotes from the favela and photos that were taken over the past 4 years. The selected intern will meet with Dr. Perlman weekly and otherwise work remotely at time and place of intern’s choice. The hours will be part time and travel expenses will be covered.

 

Skills Required

The ideal candidate will be knowledgeable about Brazil, public policy and urban issues; able to easily read Portuguese; and able to integrate maps, photos, quotes, songs, poetry and narrative text into a coherent accessible and attractive document. Our ideal candidate is a focused, well-organized person who takes initiative and is good at writing, editing and formatting documents; making dynamic visual presentations (using InDesign and PowerPoint); and engaging in creative problem-solving.

 

Compensation

$12/hour, 20 hours a week for the semester.
